Reported wildfires

Flames mark incident locations, sized by reported acreage and zoom. Blue-gray with a check means reported 100% containment, not extinguishment. Muted dashed flames have a record over 48 hours old or an unknown time; this is a display convention, not a claim about current fire activity. A smaller gray outline indicates missing acreage. Select a fire for its source dates and reported perimeter: an orange dashed boundary, not an evacuation zone.

PM2.5 observations

Small colored circles show measured monitor AQI. Gray indicates missing or older readings. Enable AQI separately for EPA’s estimated regional zones.

Enable to load AirNow monitors.

Satellite heat detections

NASA's imagery shows VIIRS thermal anomalies for the available UTC day. These are detected pixels, not fire boundaries.

Enable to check NASA's available date.

NASA FIRMS / GIBS ↗

PM2.5 AQI zones

EPA’s interpolated estimates between monitors, updated hourly by the source. These are not address-level measurements or total AQI across all pollutants. Boundaries are generalized to 0.01° for display.

Enable AQI in Layers to load regional estimates.

Animate forecast smoke

NOAA RAP near-surface smoke · contiguous US · instantaneous model samples, separate from measured PM2.5 and AQI. Colors show concentration bands, not health categories. Transparent areas are unknown; gray means 0–<1 µg/m³. Zooming enlarges a fixed regional image and adds no detail.

Enable to view NOAA RAP forecast smoke.

Inspect satellite heat detections

NASA FIRMS · NOAA-20 VIIRS · nominal 375 m pixels from the rolling 24-hour NRT file. Acquisition times reflect overpasses. Orange: nominal/high detection confidence; gray: low. Points are pixel centers, not unique fires or boundaries. Other satellites and US territories are not included.

Enable to load NOAA-20 detections.

Thermal anomalies may include industrial heat or volcanoes. No detection does not rule out fire. NASA field definitions ↗

Incident records and perimeters can lag conditions on the ground. Satellite overpasses, clouds and coverage gaps can hide fires. Fire and satellite layers do not show evacuation zones or predict spread. The separate smoke overlay shows model guidance.

VENTUSIQ / COMMUNITY EDITION

Open weather intelligence.

A free, open-source view of US weather alerts, built on VentusIQ's daemon infrastructure. Explore what is happening, where it applies, and what has changed.

Official data, visible provenance

Alerts come from the National Weather Service. Areas use the alert's own polygon when provided; otherwise we load its official affected-zone boundaries. Zone boundaries describe the alert's coverage, not an observed storm footprint.

Know how fresh your view is

We check the active alert feed about every 60 seconds. The status shows when collection last succeeded. During an outage, the last available alerts remain visible and are marked delayed. Alert issue time and collection time are different.

Alerts can describe current or upcoming conditions. Always follow official NWS and local emergency instructions. This independent project is not affiliated with NOAA or NWS.

Use it. Build on it.

The original code is licensed under Apache-2.0, including commercial reuse under its terms. Leaflet, Geist fonts, and map data retain their own licenses. The self-hosted Python daemon adapts VentusIQ's collector and freshness infrastructure.
